This morning’s rustic, DIY wedding comes all the way from the Baltic country of Lithuania.

Irma and Vaidas tied the knot with a City Hall ceremony in the Old Town of Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city. This vibrant university town sits upon the banks of the Nemunas River and the medieval Old Town oozes with history and charm.

After an exciting adventure on their way from the ceremony to the reception (I’ll let Irma tell you more!) they hosted a homely, backyard-style celebration that was bursting with vintage-inspired DIY details – all of which were created by the bride’s own fair hands.

From Irma’s elegant and wistful dress teamed with white Converse wedding shoes to their super-cute Pug dog, from the cheeky, snazzy dressed groomsmen sporting bright braces and bow ties to the inviting décor and DIY details, this cheerful wedding is brimming with relaxed character.

Irma the bride:

“For the night before the wedding I ordered a hotel room in Kaunas old town for me and my mom. My husband stayed at home with my two brothers. They helped him to prepare for the wedding day (he was all stressed out and couldn’t think clearly for about two days before the wedding).”

“The next morning Vaidas (my husband) took my bouquet and along with my brothers came to take me from the hotel to the wedding. It was very emotional and such a special moment when they all saw me as a bride.”

“From that began our special day…we married in the beautiful Kaunas town hall which is located in Kaunas old town. After the ceremony we went to take photos in Panemunė Castle and it brought more romance and joy for our day.”

“We are two simple and funny people who just loves to be around our beloved ones. That’s why our wedding was made in a rustic style, we wanted our guests to feel comfortable and cosy and to let them know how special they are for us. That’s also why we made special touches such as personalised goodies for them and a photo booth, where they could have fun by taking photos and signing our guestbook.”

“I’m starting my own decorating business called “Makumi” and all the elements and decoration of my wedding were made by my own hands (including my bridal bouquet!). My brother is also a DJ who loves to make music in his free time, so it was a real DIY wedding.”

“Since we didn’t hire a wedding musician, with the help of my brother we made our wedding party more like a nightclub than a quiet wedding celebration, there was no romantic music or songs.”

What were the highlights and your favourite memories from the day?

  • “In Lithuania there is a fun tradition where friends of the newly married couple dress up like a bride, a groom and a priest and all the other participants of the wedding hide and wait for the married couple somewhere on their way to the reception party destination. Then they block the road and ask the newly weds for some goodies (candies, champagne, etc.). If they are not given the goodies, they try to steal the bride away and marry the couple with the fake bride and groom!”

  • “The highlight was when we arrived to have our wedding photoshoot in Panemunė Castle, there was some military fete/event going on and when they saw that a married couple were coming they blocked the road, where threatening to steal the bride and were asking for some treats! My brother, who was driving our car gave them some candies and champange and then the old military man put some stamps on my hand and let us to go…it was a very memorable happening.”

Do you have any advice for couples that are currently planning a wedding?

  • “Do everything for yourself and your beloved ones, but not their way, on your own way. Then you will be the happiest bride in the world and you will feel like it is your celebration, not a celebration made just for making all your friends and relatives happy.”

Would you do anything differently?

  • “Everything was perfect. We would not change anything.”

“We were very happy with our photographer, Martynas. He understood us clearly and made wonderful, beautiful photos that perfectly reflect us and our personalities. Thanks to him, we will always remember how warm, bright and wonderful a day it was.”

“And the best thing is that we made it! That day was very special not just for us two, but also for our relatives and friends.”
