You Mean The World To Me

Laura and Jimmy’s bright sunshiny day has stolen our hearts. Their wedding embodies everything that we feel a relaxed, informal affair should be: brimming with fun while laughter fills the air (and frolics in the pool at the end of the evening, no less!).

The couple’s family and friends lovingly helped to create their DIY-done-right wedding, resulting in a personal, natural and homely atmosphere.

Of course we must give a mention to Laura and her glittery golden gown, shining like a stunning star in the Mallorca sunshine. Could a dress be any more suited to its wedding setting?

So folks, sit back and let today’s wedding transport you to picturesque Mallorca with its sun-drenched stone houses and pretty cobbled streets.

PS – Be prepared to fall in love with the pooch! Super cute.

Laura says:

“We chose to get married in Capdepera, Mallorca. We had always gone on family holidays there and my mum and brother moved out there to live a few years before we got married.  We wanted an informal, relaxed wedding in the sun with our closest friends and family, good food and lots of dancing!”

“We couldn’t have a legal ceremony in Mallorca so were actually already married before we got there (a good thing to check if you’re getting married abroad). This meant we could have a second ceremony (which we asked my mum’s godmother to officiate for us) and reception all in one location, a beautiful villa belonging to a friend. It was perfect, like something from a Bond film!”

“Our colour scheme of gold and blue was based on my wedding dress, which I absolutely adored.  I’d seen a gold sequined dress in a bridal magazine, but didn’t think I’d actually be able to find one ‘in real life’. Then I went to watch a friend in a bridal fashion show and my dress was there! I made an appointment at Ava Rose Bridal a couple of weeks later and luckily they still had it in.  I tried on some more traditional styles too, but nothing felt as special as the gold.”

“I did my own hair and make-up.  I treated myself to some new make-up from Benefit and made sure I had plenty of practice beforehand!”

“To transport us to the venue on the wedding day, my mum organised a traditional donkey and cart from a friend, Lorenzo, who has stables at the nearby beach of Cala Mesquida.”

Ceremony music:

  • Entrance of the bride music: A friend of my brothers played a traditional Mallorcan bagpipe and drum to lead us from my mum’s house (where I stayed the night before the wedding) to the venue.

“It was very much a DIY wedding and we depended a lot on friends and family to help out.  Everyone was more than happy to do this and it made them feel more involved in the day. One tip if you are doing this is to make sure everyone knows what you expect from them so you can relax and be sure that everything will be done as you imagined it.”

“To suit the informal style we had a buffet of paella, grilled chicken and mixed salads, which was just delicious, and apart from the top table, we didn’t have a table plan. All the decorations and table settings were done by friends and family on the morning of the wedding. We wrapped cutlery with lavender in white napkins, and bought candle lanterns from Ikea. Our favours were miniature bottles of Herbes, a local liquor. It looked fabulous, everyone sitting at long tables next to the pool.”

“I would really recommend a wedding abroad. We looked at it as a holiday in the sun with all our friends and family and, because we organized most things ourselves, we were able to do it on a really reasonable budget”.

“We were really touched that so many people went to the expense of flying out for us, and most people planned their annual holiday around the wedding. This meant we were able to spend plenty of time with our guests both before and after the big day. We wouldn’t have been able to do it, however, without some great local contacts and my mum and brother on hand to sort things out before we arrived.”

“If you are planning on getting married in a location you don’t know well, I think a wedding planner who is familiar with the area and speaks the language would be essential.”

What were your highlights and your favourite memories from the day?

  • “The whole day was amazing, with so many highlights. Traveling from my mums up to the venue by donkey and cart was so much fun. My mum had a great time steering the cart and everyone came out of their houses to wish us well.”
  • “I loved seeing all our friends dressed up smart – then stripping off and jumping in the pool later on in the night.”
  • “The speeches were brilliant – everyone had such lovely things to say and had spent so long preparing them.”

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be who are looking to have a destination wedding in Mallorca?

  • “If you don’t know the area well I would recommend visiting at least once before your wedding so you can scout out the place and make sure you’ve chosen the best venue and suppliers etc.”
  • “Try and stay a few days before or after your wedding and make a real holiday of it. This will give you chance to see more of your guests so you won’t feel like you have to rush from person to person on the big day.”

Would you do anything differently?

  • “Nothing, it was a brilliant day. I just wish I’d appreciated the planning process a bit more because I really missed it once it was all over.”

It was a truly fabulous day, and seeing all the photographs brings it all back again so well.
It was lovely to be able to spend time with everyone before and after the wedding rather than it all being over in one day., even though the day was so special and is one I will never forget.
