You’ve got to love a good international love story! The chance encounter’s halfway around the world, where a lovely pair randomly meet and find the one they’re going to marry; it’s what the word serendipity was surely made for!

Well, today’s darling duo has an equally lovely tale of fate to tell. Leanne is from Wales in the UK and Luke lives in Tasmania. Travel brought them to each other in Tasmania (where they were introduced by a mutual friend) as Leanne was travelling the world. They had a whirlwind romance, fell in love and decided to get hitched, so Leanne started planning to move and set up a new life in Tasmania with Luke and his adorable twin boys. I know…it’s like the perfect romantic movie script!

Due to them both being travel fans and since the guests that would be invited to their wedding would be from every corner of the globe, they decided that a destination wedding somewhere neutral would be the most suitable big day for them.

Leanne had dreamt of saying “I Do” in breathtaking Bali and it seemed the picture-perfect place for friends and family from around the world to meet and celebrate their nuptials. And a dream wedding it was too, from Leanne’s dazzling Jenny Packham dress to the magical cliff top venue, they had their day their way and it was literally a dream come true.

Leanne says:

“Travel brought me to Luke in Tasmania where I now live with Luke and his nine year old twin boys. We were introduced by our mutual friend Jess and we were together 18 months and engaged for 14 of them before we were married, and five of them we were apart and had a virtual Skype relationship going on!”

“We’d had a conversation about my travels and as a girl does I said that ‘if I ever get married…this is where I’d like to do it’…no hint or anything, but something meaningful enough that Luke remembered. We both like to travel and between us have been to some pretty exotic places all across the world, we also love the ocean and the sun, hence our wedding at Mick’s Place, Bali. It’s our perfect setting.”

“At the time Luke and I announced we were getting married I was living in the UK and Luke was living in Tasmania. A couple of months later I had planned to relocate to Tasmania for work, so we ordered some fridge magnet ‘Save the Dates’ from Not On The High Street. Our friends thought the magnets were a great idea. With the magnets we gave our guests a piece of card with the details to our wedding website we’d created through GettingMarried.co.uk.”

“We decided to make all of our wedding stationary by hand (except the Save the Dates). We made the place names, menus, tableplan and even created a guest list time capsule. This was a box that guests could write a little note and drop in for us to read on our first ‘paper’ wedding anniversary.”

“Luke and the bestman made all the napkin wraps on the day that consisted of ‘Mr & Mrs’ ribbon and hessian ribbon pinned with a tooth pic. Our favours were created by ourselves also, Blistex factor 30 lipbalm (so everyone could share the love without chapped lips) wrapped in the same paper that we used for our wedding stationary.”

“Luke and I decided to have what was called an ‘unplugged wedding’. I found the site Off Beat Bride that gives some great advice about an unplugged wedding. It recommended that Luke and I spoke to the photographers and let them know our intentions, which we did. Our MC was given the job of reminding the guests on the day that phones and cameras should be turned off. We then shared the photos to all our family and close friends who could not make our day first, before sharing to the world on Facebook.”

“We preferred our guests be with us in the moment, instead of fluffing around with their fave electronic devices. I knew it was going to be a testing experience for many of my friends, who I am sure have flat fingers because of the amount of time they spend on their phones!”

“I’ve seen lots of wedding pics on Facebook recently, uploaded by friends who have been guests and the images are the first ones people see, they’re often grainy and awkward but those will be the ones people remember. I wanted our images to be our awesome ones!”

“PhotoFactory have done an absolutely outstanding job of capturing our day beautifully. We love all our photos, even the ones that didn’t make the final cut for the album.”

“Luke and I doubted for a moment after the wedding that we may have made the wrong decision with regards to the whole unplugged wedding idea, but since seeing the pics and sharing them with our families and later our guests and now to the world on Facebook…we definitely can say we made the right choice and unplugged weddings are the way forward. None of the days beauty was spoilt through the lens or screen of an iPhone. Perfect and a definite recommendation for brides planning their wedding!”

“If there’s the option of having a wedding planner, snap it up! Luke and I booked our wedding through Bali Retreats. Bali Retreats is an Australian travel agent that really took the stress out of booking our perfect getaway by putting is in contact with Sascha Hansen from Mick’s Place in Bingin, who planned our wedding for us. Leading up to the wedding Sascha and I only ever spoke via email and we met personally only the day before to wedding.”

“On the wedding day she did all the running around and although many of my family and friends may disagree, she avoided me turning into a bridezilla! In Australia or the UK, having a wedding planner is a huge expensive. But Sascha was a fraction of the cost and well worth every dollar. Especially, as at the same time as planning a wedding I had other huge changes in my life going on – I’d recently relocated from the UK to Tasmania and started a new job. Sascha made what could have been a really testing time of my life so enjoyable – every second of it!”

Do you have any advice for couples who are looking to get married in Bali?

  • “Get married in Bali – you can have a dream wedding in a dream location at the fraction of the cost if you were to having the same day in the UK or Australia. The location, weather, culture and laid back atmosphere made our day one to remember for everyone who shared it with us. For many of our guests, they wouldn’t have chosen Bali as a holiday destination but now they are all looking for an excuse to return. They’ve even asked us when we are renewing our vows!”
