There’s something so wonderfully romantic about elopements; the idea of a day which is purely just about the two of you and for the two of you and enjoying your day totally your way.

Today’s elopement is no exception on the romance front that’s for sure! Annie and Jason put their wedding day in the trusted hands of Piteira Photography – they even asked if they could suggest a location for their destination wedding and boy, did the talented team come up trumps!

The Park and Palace of Monserrate in Sintra, near Lisbon created the most ethereal outdoor ceremony setting you’ve ever seen. It’s like a scene from A Midsummer Nights Dream. Oh, and Annie looks seriously stunning, rocking a beyond-beautiful Vera Wang gown. Prepare to be wowed with today’s wedding, it doesn’t disappoint.

Piteira Photography:

“Annie and Jason… where do I even begin? Their wedding was our first one of 2013 and was certainly a day we will never forget. They first contacted us last year to see if we were available for their wedding, they explained that it was just going to be the 2 of them, an elopement of sorts, and as we chatted about their plans for the day we knew immediately that this was going to be a wedding unlike any we´d photographed before. Neither of them had been to mainland Portugal before but had been following our blog for a while and fell in love with the country through our eyes… which is a pretty big compliment in itself, but the cherry-on-top was when they asked us to pick the location of their ceremony, as they trusted our vision and knew we would find the best spot. No pressure!!”

“You guys, this doesn´t happen very often… that the photographers get to pick the ceremony location, and it was an opportunity we weren´t going to waste! Months of location scouting ensued, to the point that people though we´d moved to Lisbon due to our Instagram feeds being full of scenic cityscapes but finally it was in the magical town of Sintra that we found the perfect place… the chapel ruins in the gardens of the Monserrate Palace.”

“Annie and Jason, thank you so much for including us in this adventure, we´re so happy you chose to work with us and eternally grateful for your faith in our abilities, both as photographers as well as event co-ordinators! Much love and happiness to you both and we truly hope we have the chance to meet up again someday.”

Annie says:

“The idea behind our wedding experience was to treat it as a spontaneous journey. We planned very little, and focused mainly on relaxing, feeling the love and excitement, and living in the moment. Everything seemed to fall into place, and we were left with magical moments of absolute inspiration.”

What were your highlights and favourite memories from the day?

  • “Our wedding day was just as we imagined it. We went swimming in the morning, grabbed espresso and pastel de natas for breakfast down the street, packed our bags, and took a deep breath! One of the sweetest moments of the day was getting ready together. I helped him tie his tie, and he helped me put on my pearls. Those are such life changing moments, and it was inspiring to experience them together. When I am 80 years old, I will still look at my husband and remember a beautiful young man, clasping my pearls moments before we officially became a family. We married in Sintra, Portugal, which can only be described as a magical place. Lord Byron even referred to it as a ‘glorious Eden.’ As the day closed, Jason and I put on jeans and t-shirts and had Ginjinha, fresh fish, and wine at a cozy little inn down the street.”

Do you have any advice for couples who are looking to get married in Portugal?

  • “My advice to brides wanting to marry in Portugal is to do it! Also, plan to visit many places in Portugal. Jason and I stayed everywhere from Lisbon, to Sintra, to Porto, to a charming orange orchard in Tavira. For an easy wedding, hire the right photographers, artists who care about your experience and are passionate about capturing something special. Kerri and Luis of Piteira Photography felt like family to us on this journey.”
