Legal requirements

Couples that are planning to get married in Greece will need to have in place important legal documentation such as birth certificates translated by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the certificate of no impediment also translated at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other paperwork that depend on the country of origin. The couple can always seek additional and up to date information from their embassy.

Keep in mind that the process of collecting the paperwork, translating it and having it authenticated is indeed a lengthy process. Planning ahead of time is essential! If you are going to hire a wedding planner, their assistance with this process can be extremely valuable.

Greek churches to have your wedding ceremony

The couple in love can plan their wedding either in one of the absolutely gorgeous churches on a Greek island or on the mainland or… even have a Town Hall wedding in the city of their choice.

Since I have been writing about the loveliest weddings in Greece, I have seen and admired some of the most beautiful churches and I am happy to share a couple of my favorite ones with you!

The best time to get married in Greece

Greece is a country that literally is beautiful all year round. It is a privileged destination that has the perfect Mediterranean weather! Although one might think that a wedding can take place only during the summer months these are few of my favorite fall weddings that are simply magical!

My favourite Greek wedding traditions

My most favourite part of the Greek wedding ceremony is the “Dance of Isaiah” or as I like to call it the “Happy ever after moment”. The priest leads the happy couple around the table three times in a celebratory dance as the maid of honour and best man hold the newlyweds’ crowns or “stefana” on their heads. The couple takes their first steps in life together as husband and wife. The “Dance of Isaiah”, the circling around the table symbolises the eternity of marriage.

Please Note:

Destination Wedding Guides are meant as just that – a guide to getting started with your destination wedding planning. Please always consult an official or expert in the country you wish to marry, to ensure you have the correct and up-to-date legal paperwork requirements for a legally binding wedding ceremony. We would always recommend using a reputable wedding planner who can fully assist you in such processes.
